WTF is idk?
Hi, I’m Elijah - the founder of IDK.
Just a dad trying to get my daughters to care about responsible money habits. An uphill batter, I assure you!
It started in 2024 when I lost my job. My girls (12 and 15 now) and I had to figure out how to make ends meet on a tight grocery budget. Instead of stressing about it, we turned it into a game - if we stayed under budget, we'd bank the extra to do something special together.
Turns out, we were pretty good at it. Even after I got a new job in 2025, we kept it going because we realized we could live comfortably on way less than we'd been spending before.
For 2026, I made the goal to level up. They needed to understand cashflow - where their money actually goes. The problem? Their money was everywhere: Greenlight account, cash in their rooms, an account their mom set up, random savings goals scattered across notebooks.
Every time I asked how much money they had, I got the same answer: "IDK."
I looked for an app that could teach them "checkbook habits" - tracking what they have, where it goes, setting goals - without connecting to real bank accounts or letting them actually move money around. Something safe. Something simple. Something that didn't feel like homework.
I couldn't find one that fit.
So my girls and I built it.
When I asked them what to call it, they gave me the same answer they always give: "IDK."
And that's how IDK was born.
